Volunteer EXTRAVAGANZA! at Yegua Knobbs Preserve

Work alongside PPLT, the Texas Conservation Corps and fellow volunteers as we prepare a 21 acre block of habitat for restoration! We will hand clear yaupon in morning shifts each day and camping is available (you may come out in the evenings to prepare your campsite and/or work). This project is funded by Cornell’s Land Trust Small Grant Program to restore habitat for native birds. We’ll be working hard, but we’ll also have fun and get to know each other better!

Yours and our safety is of utmost importance, so we are scheduling work during the cooler hours and will have unlimited water and snacks available under a tent, along with ways to cool off. The vast majority of the work is also in the shade. You may also come out during each shift and work as long as you’d like to.

As with the previously scheduled event, the TXCC can be called away on short notice, so please be sure to check back for updates on the event.

As many of you know, yaupon can easily invade woodland and forest understory in these local ecosystems, choking out diverse ground cover and other woody species, creating a monoculture that does not support diverse wildlife species. By reducing the invading yaupon we are allowing more sunlight to reach the ground and reducing competition with other woody species so that a more diverse habitat is allowed to grow. Follow-up treatment, mainly with prescribed fire, will help maintain the restored habitat.

We ask that you bring loppers and other hand tools, a lot of water, food, sunscreen and bug spray. We also urge you to wear loose fitting, long pants and long sleeved shirts, a hat and closed-toe shoes. There is poison ivy, snakes and bugs to contend with. No running water or electricity on site.
