Join us for an Open Preserve & Field Day at Billig Ranch, exploring the connections between healthy grasslands, sustainable agriculture, wildlife habitat, and the future of Texas working lands.
Come explore the preserve at your own pace, join a guided walk through one of Billig Ranch’s restored prairie areas, and connect with a terrific group of local conservation and agricultural experts. Throughout the morning, our field day leaders will share what they’re seeing on the ground and discuss how thoughtful land management can support both ecological health and productive ranch lands.
We’re excited to welcome experts from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, and Wildlife Habitat Federation, along with NRCS to the Field Day. Field walk leaders and contributors will include Tim Siegmund with Texas Parks and Wildlife, as well as experts in rangeland management, soil health, agricultural pest management, wildlife habitat, and estate planning for landowners. Light refreshments will be served.
The guided prairie walk will explore:
Native grasses, prairie plants, and forage identification
Prairie restoration and restoring degraded pastureland
Grazing management and adaptive/rotational grazing principles
Soil health, water infiltration, and drought resilience
Balancing livestock production with wildlife habitat
Identifying and managing mealy bug infestations
Conservation programs and funding opportunities through NRCS
Estate and succession planning considerations
Strategies for keeping family and working lands intact for future generations
Special donor opportunity: PPLT donors are invited to join a grassland birding walk led by PPLT’s own Board President, Luke Thompson, before the field day begins.
This field day is an opportunity to see conservation and agricultural stewardship in practice, learn directly from regional experts, and discover resources that can help landowners care for their land today while planning for its future.
